... and don't forget the old adage "If you make a mistake, do the same thing again and people will think you meant it". As Victor says, "your brain will accept it".

Or you could be one of the guys that just plays so fast nobody can tell if it was right or wrong. I had a teacher that used to say there is no such thing as a wrong note, just people with wrong expectations!!
My wife asked if I had seen the dog bowl. I told her I didn't even know he could.

I think there exists the intangible being whether the player thinks he/she is playing a wrong note. A subconscious reaction causing a millisecond of hesitation or simple reducing the "commitment" to that note?
It seems as skill and knowledge of melody/harmony expand in this lifelong journey, our willingness to explore and assimilate these outside notes and harmonies expands.
Our hesitancy to play them decreases. Commitment to these new sounds increase. We begin to appreciate that new sound. We look for others.
that is indeed a beautiful thing.
But that's just me where I'm at on this musical journey.

A friend of mine did a long, expensive jazz improvisation course. He came away VERY disappointed. They taught licks across scales and scales across licks...find your favourite lick and learn it in all keys n scales so you can play it any/every time...is how he summarized the course. I think I'm quite fortunate to be a plodding bassist. I work out my parts, add joining runs as suits the song and by the time the song's tracked my limited improvisation is done...I don't have to stun with brilliance or JacoPastoriousleadplayeronthewronginstrumentness - if I serve the song I've won.

Thank you pghboemike for sharing this video,
There are many philosophies behind what makes a great musician/improvisor, and it is very important to gather as many perspectives as possible. As stated in the video, it is important to remove the "right" and "wrong" from our playing. Everyone has a unique voice and everyone uses a unique set of tools to get that voice. Focusing on the joy, inspiration, intention, and the overall message you convey when playing your music can never be labeled by such limiting categories as right and wrong.
Of all the users on this forum, no two use Band-in-a-Box the same way, but no one is necessarily using it the "right" or "wrong way". We all learn from each other (including us here at PG Music) and see things we may never thought of doing. The same applies to the music we create.
I think Ginger Baker said it best, "It's not how fast you play, it's what you say."
Best,
Jerry

I don't know. I get tired of being told that everything is cool, there's no right or wrong, don't let the evil Music Nazis tell you you made a "mistake", there are no "mistakes", etc. Partly because nobody is SAYING that, it's just a straw man that people like to burn. But partly because I don't agree with this constantly repeated rejoinder.
The problem with "it's all right if it makes you happy" is how do I LEARN anything? How do I GET BETTER? If the teacher turns the classroom over to the kiddies saying, "I'm here to learn from you as much as you're here to learn from me!" and at the end of the day participation trophies are awarded to everyone, what skills are they going to be developing?
If everything is groovy and there's no right and wrong and all that matters is if it makes you happy, the idea of becoming a better musician becomes meaningless, it's like becoming a better eater of ice cream.
I believe musicians can become better musicians.

As an amateur/semi-pro, I play lots of wrong notes, too. Doesn’t make me sound like Victor Wooten or John Coltrane, though. These musicians are so skilled that they can turn mistakes into a piece of art. It takes a lot of practice to reach that level. The things he says about rhythm and staying put while the chords move around… that’s some deep musical thinking. I’m grateful for being pointed to that wonderful video.
Biab, Kontakt, Sampletank and lots of nice libraries, from Fluffy audio to Abbey Road drums. Check out these great contemporary Jazz Styles: www.jazzstylezz.com

I believe musicians can become better musicians. I don't know anybody that actually says that. I was joking above. There are certainly wrong notes, that just don't sound good. Dissonance is one thing, just plain awful is another. I once was in a place where a guy starts playing the piano, but the background music was still playing over the ambience speakers. Talk about dissonance and wrong notes! 2 songs played at once can do that to you!!
My wife asked if I had seen the dog bowl. I told her I didn't even know he could.

Talk about dissonance and wrong notes! 2 songs played at once can do that to you!! Makes me think of Charles Ives and his family music exercises. That'll toughen him up!

The Band-in-a-Box® Flash Drive Backup Option
Today (April 5) is National Flash Drive Day!
Did you know... not only can you download your Band-in-a-Box® Pro, MegaPAK, or PlusPAK purchase - you can also choose to add a flash drive backup copy with the installation files for only $15? It even comes with a Band-in-a-Box® keychain!
For the larger Band-in-a-Box® packages (UltraPAK, UltraPAK+, Audiophile Edition), the hard drive backup copy is available for only $25. This will include a preinstalled and ready to use program, along with your installation files.
Backup copies are offered during the checkout process on our website.
Already purchased your e-delivery version, and now you wish you had a backup copy? It's not too late! If your purchase was for the current version of Band-in-a-Box®, you can still reach out to our team directly to place your backup copy order!
Note: the Band-in-a-Box® keychain is only included with flash drive backup copies, and cannot be purchased separately.
Handy flash drive tip: Always try plugging in a USB device the wrong way first? If your flash drive (or other USB plug) doesn't have a symbol to indicate which way is up, look for the side with a seam on the metal connector (it only has a line across one side) - that's the side that either faces down or to the left, depending on your port placement.
