Super song! Any good jazz singer could make this a hit! However your vocals ain’t too bad man!

Now any good jazz excludes Rod Stewart

Great song and lyrics.

Hey Elliot...also post the lyric. Great horn background in the arrangement. And the keyboard..did you do that live, or how did you get the chords to sync up with your "overwhelmed" and "living hell"? One thing I would suggest to try to polish up: you have 2 "near rhymes": "second nature"/"whole new sensation". I think that, in other types of songs, this would be really fine, but in a Sinatra-type song, I think it will stick out a bit, because throughout you have so many nice perfect rhymes..maybe see if you can find a better match.

And, one more thing...don't be surprised if you don't hear back personally from Frankie...but this would be a perfect track for him!

Check this out: https://www.reverbnation.com/kaynemusic/song/33425455-perfect-harmony

While its not perfect ... it is so close it's scary.

Elliot, you're truly riding the leading edge of the new wave of music possibilities, and I have extreme respect and admiration for what you're doing. LOVE how you're pushing the boundaries and resetting the definition of "possible". Just mind boggling to me the creativity and hard work it must take to pull this off. Hats off to you, sir.

Swinging Jazzy goodness Elliott! I love it! Forget someone else singing this! Nobody is going to do it any better than you did! You have a wonderful voice for this material! Very nice job! Love the build up in the instrumentation as the song progresses!

Thanks, TB

Hi, Elliot.

Nice track - vocals and backing. Well done!

I was curious, so I read through the Lalals website to see how they got permission for the voices. They say "Our AI vocals are only trained with legal material, but we do not take any liability for the produced samples."

I assume "trained with legal material" means they bought the CDs the voices are taken from. So they apparently consider any use of those voices to be legal.

However, the Elvis Act will become law starting July 1. The ELVIS Act "prohibits people from using AI to mimic a person’s voice without their permission, and violations can be criminally enforced as Class A misdemeanors. The law also authorizes civil action against any person who violates this law."

I don't know if that law only applies to Tennessee, but I suspect that's going to make a dent in services like this in the near future.

Very interesting Dave I hadn't heard of that law, but I suppose many new laws to govern the use and publication of AI will be debated on years to come.

My question is ... How is this different from a Elvis impersonator singing on a record? Or the thousands of Tribute Bands who are touring the country making money on artists work many without permission from the artists.

How is this different from using Real Tracks instead of Real Musicians?

Interesting Debate .... Maybe we should open a tread in one of the other forums.

Elliott...very nicely done...AI is a pandora's box I suppose...it opens up an interesting debate about the ramifications of it all...I just wish they could "affordably" get to the place where we could clone our own voices from our younger days and use them and manipulate them digitally...I think that would be legal and helpful to us aging amateur singer/songwriters.

Good question. The short answer is... they aren't necessarily legal.

Unsurprisingly, Elvis is probably one of the most copyright protected artists in existence, including his songs, likeness, and voice.

If a tribute band is covering Elvis' songs, they are required to pay royalties on those songs.

Using Elvis' physical likeness also requires a license.

Names can't be copyrighted, but they can (and often are) trademarked. Elvis' name is trademarked, of course. And Elvis' trademark is aggressively protected.

As to singing on a record, that's a bit more complex. Most people singing with Elvis' voice are protected by parody laws, as people won't actually think that Elvis is singing, but an impersonator. But that assumes the song is a parody.

Someone releasing a song "in the style of Elvis" is likely to also be protected, as they aren't going to be confused with an actual recording by Elvis.

Then again, Elvis' estate could decide that it was close enough to confuse a consumer, and sue on those grounds.

Using the voice of an artist also uses their name recognition and established goodwill. You are arguably not just using their voice because they sound good, but because they are a well known singer with popular songs to their name.

Elvis' estate could reasonably claim that the recording causes damage to them by diluting the brand value. The artist and the estate have curated the songs that are available to the public, ensuring a level of quality. Releasing an unauthorized song in the style of Elvis arguably diminishes the value of the brand by lowering the level of quality of songs associated with his voice.

With RealTracks and Real Musicians, you've got a contract that authorizes you to use their product.

So not only are they getting compensation, they agreed to that compensation before creating the product.

With AI, you're using their voice, yet they have no say in the matter. You're literally putting words in their mouth.

And the artist is getting no compensation for that.

Apples and oranges.

OK, any further comments will go to a different thread! laugh

Hi Elliott,

I think you have copied the style of the 1930s very well (again). I like your 'dry' singing and the way the band accompanied you.
In this way; a perfect harmony!

The doubled vocal is slightly out of time on the 1st couple of syllables - giving a slight delay/chorus effect.
I think the snare hits are a little loud & harsh for the arrangement.
The stereo image seems a bit too wide for the song.
Lovely melody and a cool pastiche of the genre.
I don't hear any Sinatra - then again I'm on team AntiFrank.
Well done.

Cheers

Sounds good, I think you achieved your goal - that voice changing technology is certainly "interesting".

Elliott,

A nice throwback to the Sinatra golden age . . . I can hear him singing this no problem. Maybe Tony Bennett could have done the job as well. Nice tune and the backing band is arranged and executed very well. Good stuff!
