I tried searching this forum, but could not find an answer. Does anyone know how I can send a cc11 (I'm assuming that's the right code) to a SWAM VST to make it play? The SWAM stuff works fine when I use a controller, but to just play a tune where I select a SWAM VST for melody with no MIDI controller attached, I'm stumped. I'm not sure how to create a SYSEX file, or what it's contents would have to be. Anyone solved this ?
If I read you correctly you have a MIDI track that you want to use the Swan instrument on and you do not have a MIDI controller assigned to said track. If so you need to do is to open the MIDI track in a MIDI editor and at the vary beginning add a CC11. Or depending on your DAW you may be able to open an automation window, assign CC11 to it and draw in your volumes.
Remember that CC11 depends on the volume setting of CC7. That is CC11 at 127 (maximum setting) will only be as loud as your CC7 setting. For example of your CC7 is set at 64 then your CC11 at 127 will sound at 64.
I hope this helps and good luck.
An afterthought if you are only trying to set a given volume then open the MIDI track in one of the two above examples and use CC7, not CC11. If you are using the wind or breath controller version of your Swan device then use CC2 and not CC7.

Thanks for the reply, but perhaps I wasn't clear. I am attempting to use the SWAM instruments in a BIAB MIDI track of BIAB (not another DAW.) The newer Audio Modeling instruments have a totally different interface. I just need to use the mouse to move the "Expression" slider in any direction, and then it plays in BIAB. The older instruments (Saxes and Flute) have no such option. My suspicion is that I need to send a Sysex message to perform the equivalent of "moving" a contoller to send an Expression message.
Yes I have the old saxes. But I just picked up the new trumpet patches. In the trumpet interface I clicked on the MIDI mode (the MIDI plug in the upper right hand corner). I then click on the preset option and one of the options is MIDI Mod Wheel AT Default. This setting allows the Mod Wheel to send expression messages. Do you have the same options in your Swam presets? If so that is all you need to do.

I don't have a mod wheel. Anyway, the NEW UI is not that big an issue, as I just have to nudge the "Expression" slider and it works. It's the old Sax/Flute UI that I have no control over as a pure "playback" method without an attached controller.
There's an easy way to do this in BIAB - simply go to the Piano Roll, select Control then 11 Expression MSB, then in the bottom area click to add an Expression message. Please see my screenshot, it's much more clear than my typing at the moment!
Worked like a charm first time !! Many thanks. I'd never been a big piano roll user, but I can see there are some use cases. I LOVE BIAB and PG MUSIC !!!!
As long as there is an expert here, can I impose on you to answer one more question on the topic? Using the piano roll, I can send a cc23 to get a flutter tongue (flute) on a note, but do not know how to turn it off. IS there a way to toggle controls so that only one note (or a range) is affected?
Set CC23 to zero, that might turn it off. You may need to look at the plugin's manual to determine it's MIDI implementation.
There is no such thing as "Off" or "On" in MIDI CC messages themselves, only in how the synth responds to that CC message. CC messages output a range of numbers, usually from 0 to 127, and the synth itself determines what that means. In some synths 0 might be off and 127 might be on, in others it might be the opposite (I know of some synths where the sustain control is 0 to sustain and 127 to not sustain where in others it's the opposite), in some 64 might be off while 0 and 127 might be on (for example with an EQ control where you can boost or cut a frequency), and some synths might use all 3 for different parameters.
