I'd like to request the capability to duplicate the solo of "Instrument A" note for note using "Instrument B" so that both solos would be availble in the song.
One way to do this would be to right-click the RealTrack that plays the original solo (guitar for example) and select from a menu to freeze that track and duplicate it using a second RealTrack (sax for example).

There are places in this song by George Benson where this is happening between his voice and his guitar.
Of course, if this can already be done, I'd appreciate in knowing how.

The operative words here are duplicate and exact in terms of the notes, note durations, timing and phrasing.

For me there’s no better place in the band than to have one leg in the harmony world and the other in the percussive. Thank you Paul Tutmarc and Leo Fender.

The idea has merit.

It could of course be done with MIDI, but as RealTracks are live audio recordings, the performer would have needed to play/record the exact same phrasings on different instruments.

I used to do that with RealCharts, the RealGuitar would play a riff then I would use the RealChart midi to play the same on a sax.

Exactly. MIDI is the way to achieve this. You would use either RealCharts, the fastest and easiest way, or convert the audio to MIDI using a program like Melodyne. Just remember you will lose all of the nuances like slurs, vibrato, etc. If they are needed you would have to insert them via MIDI controls.

With audio the musician would have to duplicate the original performance. This would lead to tons of disc space. For instance one track would have to me repeated many times to cover all of the possible combinations, i.e a trumpet track to a bari, tenor, alto, soprano sax and a clarinet, and a vocal, etc, etc.

However, I will give this a +1 hoping that the magicians at PGM can pull something out of their hats and make it work without using a ton of disc space.

FWIW - I do this all of the time using only MIDI, however I can see this being a big benefit for those using RTs.

Thanks guys. After a little research on this I discovered that Melodyne (which I have) can convert audio to MIDI and then I'm thinking that it should be possible to play that MIDI on different candidate instruments. Obviously, I've never done this before but it does sound like added steps outside of BiaB. The process seems like

1. Create a new solo in BiaB
2. Export the stem from BiaB as audio
3. Import the stem into Melodyne and convert to MIDI
4. Save the MIDI in the candidate instrument
5. Export the MIDI as audio
6. Import the new audio back into BiaB (or your DAW) and play it with the rest of the band
7. If you don't like the sound, go back to Step 4 and choose a different candidate instrument, otherwise keep what you have

I'd still like to keep this request as a possible enhancement to BiaB for workflow reasons. It would be a lot less work if I could audition the new solo directly in BiaB.

FWIW - my workflow is to bring everything (all BiaB tracks) into my DAW as I find it easier to work in my DAW over working in BiaB - YMMV
1-bring the audio file into Melodyne and convert it to MIDI - you will lose the nuances as stated in previous message.
2-save the MIDI file, I save it to my desktop
3-bring the MIDI file into a blank track in my DAW
4-try out different instruments in the MIDI file then add the nuances, if desired, using MIDI controllers.

IIRC you have Studio One right? If so then Melodyne is incorporated into it via ARA. Just click ctrl m and proceed tor step #2.

I hope this helps and good luck.

I find rendering the song to audio and saving it as a midi file works pretty well. Then in Studio one I combine the audio version with the midi version. I typically use the midi file to fatten the audio file. Sometimes I’ll use the midi file to introduce a second instrument doubling the audio soloist. I usually nudge the audio file a little bit and humanize the midi file to give the impression of two players.
